Together, the two reactors produce 600 megawatts of electricity, that is, three times as much as Nimitsa with its 200 megawatts. This electricity is enough to provide all the homes in Hampton, Virginia, Pasadena, California, or in Syracuse, New York.
“Ford” needs all this power, not only for the development of a maximum speed of 35 knots, but also for feeding new EMALS electromagnetic catapults based on a linear electric motor in which an electric current creates powerful magnetic fields that give the aircraft the necessary acceleration to achieve take-off speed . This system is said to be simpler, that it extends the aircraft resource, that it is easier to maintain, and that it is capable of providing 25% more flying trips than the old steam catapult.
The new aircraft carrier will also use a more modern aircraft landing system. In a new turbo-electric aerofinisher of General Atomics, the cable tension will be regulated by an induction electric motor, which will ensure a smoother run.
