The new class aircraft carrier, Gerald R. Ford, became part of the US Navy.
On the basis of the US Navy in Norfolk, Virginia, on Saturday, a reception ceremony for the US Navy of a new aircraft carrier named Gerald R. Ford, named in honor of the 38th US president, took place. The ceremony was headed by President Donald Trump, who specially arrived in Norfolk for this purpose.
The aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford is the flagship of the new generation, built with the latest technology.
Due to the fact that the modern aircraft carrier is one of the most complex engineering structures in the world, the construction of “Gerald Ford” cost $ 13 billion (excluding the wing). The contract for the construction of the aircraft carrier was concluded in May 2004, the metal cutting began in August 2005, and the official ceremony of laying was held on November 13, 2009.
“Gerald R. Ford” belongs to the so-called “super-aircraft carriers”: the first new class of US warships in the last 40 years. It is also the most expensive in history: its construction began in 2009, with an estimated completion date of 2015 and a cost of $ 10.5 billion. Due to various improvements and delays, the total cost was higher.
“Gerald R. Ford” is designed for 50 years of operation, and its nuclear reactor allows fueling the ship only once every 20 years. The name given to the aircraft carrier is quite suitable: the 38th US President Gerald Ford served as an officer in the US Navy during the Second World War. At the ceremony of descent of the aircraft carrier to water in 2013, as an honored guest, the daughter of President Ford was invited – Susan Ford Bails.
The Pentagon plans that the supercorps of this class will gradually replace the ten aging aircraft carriers of the Nimitz class, now serving in various regions of the planet. According to the estimates of the US Navy command, the construction, together with Gerald Ford, of two more new aircraft carriers – John F. Kennedy and the Enterprise – will cost 43 billion dollars.
As part of the US Navy, Ford will replace the first-ever nuclear carrier Enterprise, which was withdrawn from the first line in 2012 and officially decommissioned in February 2017, which was transferred to the US Navy in November 1961. The basis of the combat strength of the US Navy’s carrier forces is currently 10 ships of the Nimitz type, transferred to the fleet from May 1975 to January 2009.
The displacement of Ford exceeds 100 thousand tons. From its predecessors, it differs, among other things, by the presence of an improved airfighter, electromagnetic catapults, new radar, power plant, modified superstructure, hull and configuration of the flight deck. The maximum number of air wing can reach 90 aircraft. It is assumed that the ship will carry as already existing aircraft, such as F / A-18E / F Super Hornet fighters, EA-18G Growler fighters, E-2 Hawkeye and Advanced Hawkeye flying radars, SH-60 helicopters, and the new generation of vehicles, including F-35C fighters and unmanned aerial vehicles X-47B. ”
Together, the two reactors produce 600 megawatts of electricity, that is, three times as much as Nimitsa with its 200 megawatts. This electricity is enough to provide all the homes in Hampton, Virginia, Pasadena, California, or in Syracuse, New York.
“Ford” needs all this power, not only for the development of a maximum speed of 35 knots, but also for feeding new EMALS electromagnetic catapults based on a linear electric motor in which an electric current creates powerful magnetic fields that give the aircraft the necessary acceleration to achieve take-off speed . This system is said to be simpler, that it extends the aircraft resource, that it is easier to maintain, and that it is capable of providing 25% more flying trips than the old steam catapult.
The new aircraft carrier will also use a more modern aircraft landing system. In a new turbo-electric aerofinisher of General Atomics, the cable tension will be regulated by an induction electric motor, which will ensure a smoother run. Like electromagnetic catapults, this aerofinisher should become more reliable than the brake acting on the Nimitz. It will also ease the load on the airframe.
The aircraft carrier “Ford” has the most modern radar in the whole fleet. There is a dual-band radar system that integrates the Aegis X-band multifunctional radar AN / SPY-3 and the SSR VSR volumetric radar. This dual-band radar system provides search, tracking and highlighting of a large number of targets for missiles, the detection of enemy aircraft and missiles and the launch of Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) interceptor missiles for their destruction.
For self-defense, there are two Mk launchers on the aircraft carrier. 29 for eight ESSM missiles for each, as well as two launchers for anti-aircraft missiles RAM. The ship is also equipped with a Phalanx melee weapon system for objective defense against aircraft, missiles and small enemy ships, and four M2 caliber machine guns .50. The huge electrical power will allow Ford to put on the defensive laser weapon on the board in the future. Such weapons, receiving energy from ship reactors, will have virtually unlimited ammunition, which will significantly expand the defensive capabilities of the aircraft carrier.
The aviation wing of the aircraft of the deck aviation is the main offensive and defensive weapon of the Ford. On board the aircraft carrier, two squadrons of F-35C single fighter aircraft with 10-12 vehicles, two squadrons of F / A-18E / F Super Hornet fighter planes with 10-12 aircraft, five E-18G Growler electronic aircraft, four aircraft DRLO E-2D Hawkeye and two transport aircraft C-2 Greyhound. The air wing will also include eight MH-60S Seahawk helicopters. Later, the ship will be equipped with drones for refueling in the air and conducting reconnaissance of the MQ-25 Stingray. Over time, the sixth generation fighter must replace the Super Hornet.
